The Digital Audio Tape DAT technology is the most prolific of all tape technologies. The DAT tape was formerly known as DDS Digital Data Storage. Over 15 million DAT drives have been sent since the first products were introduced in 1989 and over 6 million since 2000. This gives rise to a conservative estimate one million 6-User installed base. The HP StorageWorks DAT160 tape drive is the latest edition of family DAT. It was released by HP in June 2007. Unit DAT-160 is an evolution of existing technology and DAT has much in common with the five previous generations of DAT. It is estimated that over 6 million DAT tape drives around the world currently installed. The DAT tape cartridge media is the low cost of media and provides its customers the lowest cost of ownership.
HP StorageWorks DAT 160 tape has 80 GB native capacity and up to 160 GB with 2:1 compression of data. HP DAT-160 has a throughput of 6.9 MB / sec native, more than 13.8 MB / s with 2:1 compression of data. The DAT160 provides approximately 160 GB of backup in less than 4 hours. Increased capacity can be achieved mainly by using more wide tape to DAT160, but still provides backward read and write compatible with DAT72 and DAT40 media. This can be done by two independent mechanisms for targeting and tape paths inside the device.
DAT 160 supports HP StorageWorks One Button Disaster Recovery when used with the relevant software and HP ProLiant servers, enabling total reconstruction of a server from a single backup tape. It also includes Single Server Edition HP Data Protector Express backup / recovery and recovery software disaster. DAT-160 print media is supported on a wide range of operating systems and backup applications.

DAT160 media is just a broader version of DAT40 media technology using metal particles MP 150 m long. This is the same type of tape as it has been shipping since 1994 in DAT40 cartridges. He has a proven record of reliability. However, amid DAT160, an expanded version of the tape has been used to allow greater capacity. DAT160 unit accepts both sizes of the media, but the points around the drum in different ways.
Rate of technology transfer is determined in DAT part by the contact angle (amount of tape wrapped around the drum rotating helical scan) and the speed of rotation of the drum. The contact angle of the unit is DAT160 of 180 degrees compared to only 90 degrees to the previous generation technologies, DAT, so the DAT-160 drive is actually more efficient use of tape in contact with the head to increase the throughput. Generations will increase the speed of the drum.
HP's approach using the tape regardless of segment mechanisms was the discovery that allowed the DAT160 drive to write and to read DAT-72 and DAT-40 media. When the concept of loading two different heights of the cartridge with two different bandwidths was invented, HP used simulation techniques to extensive computer modeling tape segmentation and routing for each type of tape. The results of these simulations indicated that the design concepts were practical and yielded good levels of margin to allow the project to be successful.
The most difficult challenge was to accommodate all mechanical components in the physical space available. However, using the HP standard product design and test methodology, the mechanical solutions necessary and improvements have been evolving. The robust engineering and scope of tape guides are the keys to a successful exchange.
