History
While Sony did in the 1980s computers for the Japanese market only, Sony withdrew from the computer business by around 1990. Later, Sony re-entered the market, this time globally, under the new VAIO brand, started in 1996 with the PCV series of desktops.
Brand VAIO
The VAIO is a sub-brand for many of the products of Sony computers. The brand was created to distinguish items that the consumer audio and video used as conventional computing products.
One example was the Sony VAIO W Series personal computer, which was a normal PC and entertainment center in miniature.
Sony is expanding the use of the VAIO label. It can now be found on notebooks, subnotebooks, desktop, and a hard drive with audio-player which comes in both 20GB and 40GB variations (called VAIO POCKET player).
VAIO Features
High-end notebooks are usually comes with Microsoft Windows Vista Home Premium or Business, while low-end laptops, such as the N series comes with Microsoft Windows Vista Home Basic.
In October 2005, VAIO laptops are available upon request without pre-installed software at a price slightly lower. More recently, some models have come with a recovery CD, but a special partition on the hard disk is used for the retrieval of information, including operating system and all the bundled software. VAIO users are prompted to create a set of CDs or DVDs to recover immediately after purchase.
VAIO computers use Intel, Seagate Technology or Fujitsu hard drives, Infineon RAM, Sony (usually made by Hitachi) or Matsushita optical drives, Intel processors or graphics NVIDIA and speakers from Sony.

Software Bundled
VAIO computers feature a wide range of specially designed or bundled software that help you use the laptop for multimedia effects. Many of these applications inspired similar software or integration into the Windows operating system, for example, Movie Maker Shaker preceded Windows XP's Movie.
Additional products software package may include:
- Adobe Photoshop and Premiere Elements. These products are provided as part of the integration of audio and video boasts Sony's VAIO series.
- SonicStage, manager of digital music. Integrated with the music service Sony Connect to download, which allows users transfer music to Sony standalone music players, PDAs, or PSP.
- PictureGear, software image management that preceded the popular programs like Picasa.
- VAIO Zone, used to listen to music, viewing slide shows of photos, and watch TV (when a tuner is present) and DVD. VAIO Zone is an equivalent to Apple's Front Row and Windows XP Media Center Edition.
VAIO Trivia
Sony VAIO called the line using a acronym for "Video Audio Integrated Operation". The VAIO logo is a combination of technology of digital and analog signal. The 'VA' represents an analog wave and 'IO' represents digital binary code.
