On top of its design clean and functional, the Fujitsu Lifebook E8410 also shows Intel's technology the most innovative notebook to date, Centrino Pro, based on the latest Centrino platform codenamed Santa Rosa. While Centrino Pro and Fujitsu E8410, are aimed at corporate users, the new Santa Rosa platform offers a number of benefits for any situation E8410 and impressed us throughout our tests (see also the Asus F3Sv (pre-production model) and the Acer Aspire 6592G (601G16N)).
Santa Rosa is the next step towards the ubiquitous Intel Centrino platform and brings a fresh series of enhancements to the notebook market (ASUS title = "A32-ul20"> A32-ul20 laptop batteries). On top of these new features Intel Centrino Pro adds Active Management Technology (AMT) in the mixture. AMT is similar to vPro to the workspace and could be very useful as a tool of management. However, before factoring in the AMT equation there is much with the new Santa Rosa platform.
Some of the most notable of these improvements are faster wireless connectivity, through pre-n Wi-Fi 802.11a/g/n, Turbo Memory and a set of new processors based on the Merom Core 2 Duo micro-architecture. AMT added feature for notebook Centrino Pro allows IT administrators and staff support to remotely access fleets wireless computers for patches, updates, diagnostics and a certain level of maintenance.
The new platform also have a brand new Intel 965 Express UM09E31 based on the chipset integrated graphics X3100 () for enhanced video clarity and brightness (cheap 11.1V, 6-cell laptop battery, battery for ACER UM09E31). However E8410 reviewed the Fujitsu has a NVIDIA 8400M G graphics card, an NVIDIA's latest DirectX 10 graphics cards for notebooks.
Installed in E8410 is a processor T7300 2.0GHz, 1GB RAM DDR2 667MHz, and those NVIDIA 8400M G graphics card. As mentioned above, Turbo Memory is the New Features of Santa Rosa, but it is an optional part platform. Turbo Memory uses NAND flash memory reduces the time windows takes to boot, load applications and can speed up the multi-tasking. Unfortunately, Fujitsu E8410 also not have the optional Turbo Memory installed. The memory can be installed on a mini PCI Express slot and is one of the most impressive additions to the Centrino platform, so it's disappointing not to see this unit.
Although the T7300 sports the same frequency as the current generation of T7200 (2.0 GHz), there a number of improvements that make this notebook a little faster. Firstly, the 667MHz front side bus (FSB) of the current-generation Centrino platform was raised to 800MHz in Santa Rosa. This added bandwidth provides a pipeline greater and faster to transfer data between the processor, chipset and RAM.
Another feature key is Enhanced Dynamic Acceleration, which allows one core to shut down when both cores are not required by an application. The energy saved in the core can be used to boost the still active core and increase performance in single-threaded applications. In WorldBench 6, with its 2.0GHz (T7300) CPU and 1GB of RAM, which held a total score of 74. Since the Centrino Duo-based Acer Aspire 9425WSMi, which also has a processor 2.0GHz (T7200), scored 71, but has 2GB of RAM installed, we are impressed with this result. It also conducted a test using coding Cdex, a freely available, single-threaded coding. In this test we encode 53 minutes of WAV files to 192Kbps MP3 files. Although not a gaming machine, NVIDIA 8400M G is one of the new generation architecture unified shader, DirectX 10 graphics processing units (GPU) and was able to drill a respectable score for a business notebook. 3DMark 2006 it had 1125. The 15.4in screen is clear and bright, but has a shallow viewing angle that is common to most notebooks of this size. Built in the frame around the screen is a 1.3 megapixel camera, which is a nice touch, and is useful for videoconferencing using Windows Live Messenger, example. For connectivity, the E8410 has four USB ports, a FireWire port and an Express Card slot and a PC Card slot. Also installed are a VGA port and an S-Video, and serial and parallel ports. A card reader supports SD and MS Pro formats, and will come in handy when getting photos off a digital camera, for example. The E8410 also offers a Gigabit Ethernet port, with support from the AMT.
