Classification of Computer:

General Purpose Computers:

Classification by Physical Size:

Microcomputer: Microcomputer is at the lower end of the scale in terms of computer speed and storage capacity. Your CPU is a microprocessor. The first microprocessors were built of 8-bit microprocessors. The most common application of personal computers (PC) are in this category. The PC supports a number of input devices and output. Examples of personal computers are IBM PC, PC-AT etc.

Mini Computer: This is the project to support more than one User at a time. It has large storage capacity and operates at a higher speed. The mini-computer is used in multi-User system where multiple users to work at the same time. This type of computer is generally used for processing large volumes of data in an organization. They are also used as servers in local area networks (LAN).

Mainframes: These types of computers are usually 32-bit microprocessors. They operate at a very high speed, is capable very large storage and can handle the workload of many users. They are generally used in centralized databases. They are also used as control nodes in Wide Area Networks (WAN). Examples are December, ICL and IBM 3000 series.

Supercomputer: They are the fastest machines and more expensive. They have high processing speed compared to other computers. They have also multiprocessing technique. One of the ways in which the supercomputer are built is through the interconnection of hundreds of microprocessors. Supercomputers are being used primarily for weather forecasting biomedical research, the design of aircraft remote sensing, and other areas of science and technology. Examples are CRAY YMP, CRAY2, NEC SX-3, Cray XMP and PARAM in India.
