What is Bluetooth low energy?

Bluetooth low energy is pretty much what it says on the tin. It is a new Bluetooth protocol, which is built on the Bluetooth protocol standard, but uses incredibly small amounts of electric energy so little in fact that a device will be able to operate for an entire year using only a small button cell.

As time was around?

Although the first of these chips appeared to be manufactured in April 2009, the concept has been around for a couple of years and has been called different things. When the Bluetooth Special Interest Group (SIG) came up with the concept was called Wibree. Later it was renamed as Ultra Low Power (ULP) Bluetooth Technology, and acquired its current name in 2009.

How will it be used?

Bluetooth low energy is the next evolution of Bluetooth technology and it is designed to transfer data between two devices extremely efficient, using only a minimal amount of electricity. How this will work is best explained by an example.

Imagine that you are wearing a sportswatch that monitors your heart rate and blood pressure continuously while you are out on a race training. Without you take any measure, his sportswatch be able to transfer this data to your phone via Bluetooth low energy, and your phone will be able to transmit data over the Internet directly to your site so you can analyze it later, or your coach to examine it in real time.

This is just one example and, of course, there are a number of other potential applications. We will outline a little later in this article and we describe them in depth in the future.

Evolutionary or revolutionary – that one is?

So far, we have referred to this new technology as revolutionary and evolutionary. This is not an error or an attempt to confuse our readers. In fact, the technology is both. Whatever sport that can be involved, Bluetooth low energy will allow you to track your performance in real time and transmit it directly through the Internet.

Other gadgets that are related to the above are in the health field. For example, someone with diabetes can use Bluetooth devices for low power constantly monitor their levels of blood sugar and the data can be transmitted directly to the physician or the physician; heart data could be monitored for any anomalies, the health of the elderly can be controlled remotely.

Of course there are many other applications that do not involve the health and fitness. For example, it will be used in remote control in home appliances and entertainment systems. What is certain is that hundreds or even thousands of new applications emerge over the coming years.

Before long, all new smartphones will incorporate dual-mode Bluetooth low energy. Industry analysts estimate that by 2014 the consumption of Bluetooth chipsets incorporating Bluetooth Low Energy will have two billion per year.
