Ubuntu 8.10 does not work, I can login, then a blank screen appears blak or orange?

I installed from the LiveCD without any problem. I was able to login, but then a blank screen with just showing my cursor appears. I have a Dell Dimension 2400 desktop with a Pentium 4.

Ubuntu is the only operating system on your desktop or are you dual boot with another operating system? You manually configure the partitions or you leave it to the program do this automatically?
