Which is better option? 3GB DDR2 SDRAM 800MHZ – 1x2GB 1x1GB vs. 4GB Dual Channel DDR2 SDRAM 800MHz – 2DIMMs?

I’m trying to figure out what the difference is between these two memory options on a Dell Vostro 220 desktop computer that I’m going to purchase and whether it’s actually worth an extra $40 to upgrade to the 4 GB Dual Channel. Can anyone translate what the differences between the two would actually mean for the computer’s performance? This will be my main computer for leisure, work, and school. I won’t be playing any games, but I want something that won’t bog down when my antivirus runs its scan as my current PC does. Any insight would be appreciated!

Dual-channel versus single-channel makes a huge difference in memory speed which translates to a noticeable difference in performance over large data sets. But with your planned use, I don’t think it’ll make much difference. Just be sure to get a 64-bit OS so you can upgrade later if you want to.
