Gateway Desktop Restore

My bf downloaded a virus on our computer. I turned off the virus, but now it is restarted. And we can not stay the same.?
When you turn it pretends as your login and then go to the password screen and do not have a password set for that computer. We tried removing the CMOS battery and did not work. It is a desktop gateway 556ge. I can not make a recovery disc, the manufacturer because its out of warranty. Any other lost cost suggestions? Any ways around it. By Please break it down into simple terms.
Boot to "Safe Mode" and then run System Restore. I'm not sure about the Gateway PC F8, but can get there when you boot up!
