Save money: Dump GotoMyPC Remote Desktop and Related Programs

We are saturated to add programs that will "leave" we have access to our PCs work from home, or vice versa, using a third-party product that will run you about $ 40 a month. That's $ 480 per year. No I can think of some other things I'd rather spend that money especially when, by virtue of my ownership of a Windows PC and an Internet connection, since I have the ability to do so.

Windows XP, Vista or 7 computer has a built-in program is called Remote Desktop, which uses the Remote Desktop Protocol (RDP) to allow access at desktop or from your computer through the Internet. With just a few clicks, you can access your home PC from work or on the road. If you have domain on your work computer, or are good with the guys in IT, you can also access your computer from working outside the office, at no additional cost. Here is a quick overview of how to set everything:

1. Enable Remote Desktop on your PC – In Windows XP, right-click My Computer> Remote tab and make sure that all users connect remotely to this computer is checked. Click Select Remote Users and make sure they are listed.

2. Configure Pass RDP Router Traffic – Open port 3389 for the PC desktop that you want to access. The last entry in the example below shows how this configuration look in my Linksys firewall

3. Use DynDNS - If you not have a static IP address, install the DynDNS, which will help it to your PC from anywhere in the world using a friendly name as mydesktop.freeIP.com. You can set up a free account on target = "_new" rel = "nofollow" href = "http://www.dyndns.com/"> http://www.dyndns.com.

4. Leave the computer! - This may seem an obvious choice, but I have asked it for enough people to justify mention it here. You need to make sure to leave your computer if you want to access it remotely. You also want to adjust the Power Options to prevent the computer going to sleep. Click Start> Control Panel> Options energy and set all options except Monitor to NEVER.

5. Configure the RDP – Finally we are ready to connect to your PC remotely to say, your home machine or laptop in the cafeteria. All you need to know if the IP address or the name you set up the DynDNS.

Click Start> Programs> Accessories Remote Desktop Connection and enter the IP address or DynDNS name as shown below and then click Connect and you're in!

While I assure you all the steps I described above is super easy, there are free alternatives that do not require much configuration. LogMeIn.com offers a great free service and requires only a quick installation of your software. Once installed, you will be able to access your computer over the web from any computer in the world through logmein.com website.
