What is blue screen problem?

I'm really scared. I just got my Sony VAIO NW series a month ago for college. Since is for college, I'm really hoping nothing will go wrong with it, because that would be a horrible thing to happen. Anyway, as I was downloading a novel, my computer suddenly went off and this page is where a black / gray, and said that Windows has encountered a problem and they had to restart it. Then, then they asked if I wanted to start in Safe mode or PC, got pc because I do not know what was safe mode. Then the screen went dark gray again, and took some time for my desktop to come up. Then a window appeared and said he had recovered and they said the problem was "bluescreen". Is this a sign of serious problem? I'm really scared and I do not know what bluescreen is. Thank you:)

This is generic error message from Microsoft for when its operational failure. It could be a number of things. Try not to run many programs at once and if you are downloading something not its tax system. Should be fine.
