Sony Vaio Desktop Video Card
Is this video card compatible with my computer?
This is the video card I was looking: XFX GeForce 8600 GT Video Card – 512MB DDR3, PCI Express (http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/searchtools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=3301408&body=MAIN detailspecs #) My Computer (http://reviews.cnet.com/desktops/sony-vaio -ra840g/4507-3118_7-31382931.html) runs on a power supply of 400 watts. I'm more concerned with the power required external cable (http://www.hardwarezone.com/img/data/articles/2004/1192/08-agp-power_install.jpg) (http://cache-www.intel.com/cd/00/00/16 / 63/166387_166387.JPG). Some photos show the need for extra energy and other places not. If this letter really requires that external power cable, would my computer run it?
My personal opinion (and I may be wrong here) is that the computer may not be fast enough to make the most of this card. News (Pentium D's are old now.) I'm not saying it will not work because of that, though. As as they require extra power, check out the photo that shows the contents of the box. On the right is a cable that has 3 plugs. Two of these are standard Molex plugs, the third would be taken in the video card. (Presumably, that would be used if your PSU has a PCIe power connector, you probably not.) What you should look at is the amount of amps on the PSU provides 12V + line. (It should say on the label of the PSU.) You need one that provides at least 22 amps to use the card only, 24 amps for SLI. (And it would be much better.) I would not be surprised if you need a better PSU for that card.
