Sony Vaio Vgc-rb30 Memory
Adding RAM and CPU to my new PC?
I have a Sony Model: VAIO VGC-RB30 Memory: 512 MB = 256 MB (removable) + 256 MB (removable) Maximum amount of memory: 2.0 GB CPU: 3.0GHz Intel Pentium 4 530J Chipset 800MHz FSB, Intel 915G chipset. This is part two questions 1.) What is a chipset. I went to Intels site and says its upgraded to 4 GB of RAM, but Sony's website says its only expandable to 2GB and that is why I put 4 sticks of 1gb each one says it is ??????? 2.) My CPU. I want to update it too, but am not sure if my computer can support it. 1. Chipset is basically the northbridge on the computer that controls the speed and amount of memory and such, its a little complicated to explain. I really can not understand why you would be unable put 4 sticks of 1GB instead of having 4 slots that each supports up to 1GB each and your chipset supports 4 GB, but I think you should trust Sony, you do not want to spend money not make it work. To be honest, there really is no need for more than 2GB anyway. 2. I know for a fact that this chipset does not support the Core 2 Duos, for one thing only supports up to a 800MHz front side bus, and the Core 2 Duos have the 1066. There are other architectural reasons as well.
