Can I easily replace the hard drive on a desktop PC?
I made startup CDs after I purchased the Sony Vaio and have backed up my files. Or do I need to go to a service depot?
Replacing a Hard Drive in a computer depends on your knowledge of electronics, as well as the kinda of desktop it is.
General Instructions are as follows.
1) remove the side cover of the computer. (normally, either one of the sides will come off (on newer models), The face will come off and then the side (not too new or not too old models) or the entire case (both sides, not the face) will come off (on older models)
2) once removed, locate the hard drive. The hard drive will have to wires coming out of them. carefully pull them out (this may be hard to pull out since they are jammed in there tightly, so you will need force but be careful that you do jerk your hand and stab it on the sharp metal corners on the frame. (don’t unhook the cables from the computer mother board, just the hard drive)
3) locate the screws, now for this it could be several different ways, and since you did not mention what kind of computer it is, its kind of hard to tell, but here goes. One some computers there are plastic strips on the side of the hard drive, if there are plastic strips, then you just life the the two tabs and slide the hard drive out. (this HD will be in a horizontal position 99% of the time). If it is vertical it will be in a metal silver cage, with one or 2 screens, just un screw the screws, and and remove the cage,
4) once the HD is out, remove the 4 screws from the sides, and swap out the hard drive, and stick it back in.
make sure you hook up the wires correctly and fire that bad boy up.
Disclaimer: My instructions above is a guide only, I take no responsibility on what happens with your computer. I am a System Engineer with Apple, and am certified with both Apple and Microsoft, and the instructions above are as clear and precise I can give without actually doing the work my self. Again perform work on your computer at your own risk. I take NO liability in your work
PS. Please use the right tools, if you don’t have the tools, don’t do it, don’t strip and screws or anything, cause it will make it that much harder on you and the tech that may need to clean up the mess. Make sure you discharge and static build up by touching a metal piece on the frame of the computer (NO THE POWER SUPPLY)
